ZLATKA SHISHKOVA

Financial coordinator, alternative program lead, teacher

I am very glad that I have been a part of the Bulgarian school in Boston for more than 17 years and that I have witnessed its flourishing and unceasing energy! I have held a variety of roles during that time and I continue to be a member of the Board of Directors and the teaching staff - 2 teams that are a pleasure to work with. I consider the opening of the alternative program for children who do not speak Bulgarian to be my greatest contribution.
My education includes a bachelor's degree in economics and informatics, and a master's degree in business administration. Professionally, my work has been indirectly related to education: I have been involved in the development and distribution of computer applications for use in the classroom for students in grades 1 to 12; in analyzing and consulting on the use of school resources in various school districts and states, and in the administration of another private school in Massachusetts. I am glad that I can use my experience for the benefit of our Bulgarian school. Outside of work, I spend my time visiting museums, pyrography, reading fiction, nature walks and folk dancing.

I have graduated in Economics and Labor Organization with a Master's Degree in the Labor Exchange subject to the development of the labor market at UNWE. I have been in the early childhood education system since 2011, and in 2013, after receiving the CDA - Child development accreditation, I started working at one of the Kindergartens of MIT.

I hold all the certifications required for the state of Massachusetts and the federal level for a senior teacher and administrator in the field of early childhood education from 0 to 6 years of age. In my work, I advocate Reggio Emilia's philosophy that a child is an able individual who needs to be given a field and an opportunity for expression. It is extremely important to me as a teacher and parent to keep the spark of patriotism in the hearts of our children.

svetlana dimitrova

Teacher

Hello! My name is Svetlana. My goal at the Bulgarian school is to contribute with my knowledge, skills and desire to teaching our beautiful language to the Bulgarian children.

The fact that I have encountered the need to learn several languages is my advantage, which helps me to teach our native language to your children in an easy and understandable way.

I was born in Sofia, but gladly after graduating from high school I moved to the best city in the world - Plovdiv. I have lived in Boston with my husband since 2012 and we have two children.

I have a Bachelor's degree in “Tourism” from Plovdiv University and a Master's degree in “International Marketing” from Varna Free University.

My passion, however, is photography and I do it both for my personal pleasure and professionally.

IVAN BATCHVAROV

Teacher

I have two sons in our school and it is very important for me to keep the Bulgarian self-awareness in them. I have graduated from the Lovech Language High School (for reference - the movie "Yesterday") with French and from the Academy of Economics in Svishtov with International Economic Relations. I have two Master Degrees - one in European Integration from Sofia University and one in Business Administration from the American University in Bulgaria.

So far my professional career has not been linked to the teaching profession. I worked in the outsourcing industry in Bulgaria at the managerial level, and here I work in a consulting firm that implements software automation. The pace of change in today's technology makes certain types of knowledge outdated at the speed of light. Knowledge of the history and geography of Bulgaria is knowledge that does not go out of date. I want to give our children a chance to love our country by learning about its history and geography.

Stela Wasson

Teacher

I have been a teacher since 2010, and I specialized in teaching English. I have worked with different age groups and people from all over the world. I received a bachelor's degree in Applied Linguistics from Shumen University and a master's degree in Translation from Plovdiv University.

My passion for teaching Bulgarian started back when I was living in Washington State, where local Bulgarian parents asked me to be their children's teacher. I moved to Massachusetts in 2017 and am involved with our school in various ways: as a teacher, parent, and supporter. It is an honor for me to share my knowledge with the children and to awaken their interest in Bulgarian culture and traditions.

I have a daughter who has been attending the Bulgarian school from the young age of 3. In my spare time, when I'm not working or teaching, I like to travel, play dodgeball and basketball with my daughter (while she still plays with mom), and paint.

Dr. Deyan Penev

Teacher

I have lived with my family in Syracuse, New York for twelve years. There is no Bulgarian school in the city, and at the time of Covid-19, my wife and I started looking for distance learning options for our two children. That's how we got in touch with the Bulgarian School in Boston. For the third year now, our children (aged 11 and 6) continue to attend the virtual classes.

I graduated in Social Pedagogy with a second major in History at Sofia University. After graduation, I worked in a social service and in the child protection system in the city of Sofia. For the past seven years I have worked in the city of Syracuse in a federal program to assist people with low income.

I meet the children of the class every week and it makes my connection with the Motherland more alive. Abandoned schools in Bulgaria are not one or two, and perhaps everyone has encountered such a sight. For this, Bulgarian schools outside the country are paving their way and opening their doors on September 15 for the Bulgarians, who may one day return or at least know their origin and language. It was with such hope that I joined the Bulgarian School in Boston.

I work as a financial analyst at Harvard. I have a degree in accounting from Northeastern University and a master's degree in finance from Brandeis University. I have two children who study at the Bulgarian School. I love children and it gives me great pleasure to be surrounded by them, so I am glad to be a part of the Parent Teacher Organization at our school. At Sofia University I studied one year of pre-school pedagogy and then one year of public administration. I've been in the US for 20 years and married to an American, so I try very hard to uphold the Bulgarian traditions and culture in our family. It is very important to me that my children know where their roots are and be proud of their origins.
